In this weeks lecture we discussed old information technologies and how we have progressed since then. One of the oldest methods of communication that we looked at was rock carvings and the first alphabet. Communcation has advanced significantly since then to things that may not have seemed inaginable a few decades ago.
In Tutorial4 we look at web sites we may not be familiar with (other then Google and Wikipedia) and answered the following questions.
Part 1.

Which Brisbane based punk band is Stephen Stockwell a member of?
After some searching on Altavista with no success just different listing of band names I thought that the easiest way to find out what band he is a member of is myspace.
Sure enough I typed in Stephen Stockwell's name to myspace and found him and the band The Black Assasins.
It doesn't actually say that he is a band member but after listening to the songs it is recognisable that he is a singer in the band and there are a few pictures posted of him as well.

Define Web 2.0 in your own words.
Web 2.0 is the network that binds all internet and computer software technologies connecting them together in one network.
Part 2.
Search Engines rank their data from most relevant to least relevant from taking the keys words which you type into the search engine and then categorising the connecgtion of key word linkings.
The top search results are ranked in that order so that all the key words you are looking for are in that document. The further down the page you go the less key words and less relevance. You are less likely to even bother reading these documents.
The main search engine I use is google and for the purpose of uni Google Scholar and the online academic journals that can be found on the Griffith Library page. Any other sources for academic referencing is not always accurate and also is not regularly updated to ensure a reliable source of reference.
As for other sites I use IMBD Internet Movie data base to look up a move I want to see. Since I have myspace if I want to find out new music and bands I will look there. I never use Wikipedia unless I want an extended movie review that IMDB does not have the outline for and as found out in Lecture 5 anything can be written by anyone on Wikipedia that may be true or false.
Reading: The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction
Walter Benjamin's 1936 article 'The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction' discusses the reproduction and manipulation of art before technology gave the freedom to simply replicate exact copies. Before such technologies we have today the replications of art were still somewhat unique as there were slight differences between each copied artwork. Walter Benjamin analysises that mechanical reproduction changed the social and political perspectives of art and art experiences. Benjamin discusses the notion of 'aura' describing the presence or experience by art and how replicating art removes the 'aura' in art.
